Anyone can sit for the exam. There are no qualification requirements — you just need basic accounting knowledge.

After passing both the papers, you will need to submit 2 years work experience and Bachelor’s or equivalent degree to IMA within 7 years of passing both the papers to get the Certificate.
Yes. You don’t need a degree to sit the CMA exams, so many students start during their B.Com or BBA. You just need an active IMA membership and the CMA entrance fee. The degree comes in later, because IMA only awards the certificate once you show a bachelor’s degree (or an accepted professional certification) and two years of work experience.
Most candidates pass both parts in 12 to 18 months while studying around a job or degree. A focused student can do it in about 6 to 8 months by taking one part per testing window. IMA gives you three years from enrollment to pass both parts, and seven years to finish the education and experience requirements.
IMA replaced the two essay questions with case-based questions (CBQs). From the September/October 2026 window, each part has 100 MCQs followed by two short cases. Each case has six or seven questions in formats like numerical entry, drag-and-drop and multiple select. The total exam time and the exam fees did not change.
You need a scaled score of 360 out of 500 on each part. Before you can reach the case-based questions, you must answer at least 50% of the 100 MCQs correctly. If you fall short of that, the exam ends after the MCQ section and you can’t pass that attempt, so MCQ practice matters a lot.
IMA charges three fees: an annual membership, a one-time CMA entrance fee, and an exam fee for each of the two parts. Students get reduced rates on all three. Your prep course fee is separate. Check IMA’s enrollment page for current US dollar amounts, and contact us for Mirchawala’s latest CMA course fee.
You can take Part 1 or Part 2 in any order. Most students start with Part 1 because its budgeting, costing and reporting topics build the base for Part 2’s financial decisions and investment analysis. If you’ve just finished corporate finance at university, starting with Part 2 while it’s still fresh also works well.
If you’re aiming for finance manager, controller or CFO roles, yes. It’s only two exams, so it’s quicker than most qualifications, and IMA has members in over 140 countries. IMA reports that CMAs earn a 21% higher median salary than non-certified peers. It’s best for people who want management accounting and business roles rather than audit or public practice.
Yes, and many do. ACCA gives you broad accounting, audit and tax knowledge, while CMA adds a sharp focus on budgeting, cost control and strategy. IMA gives no exam exemptions for ACCA, so you still sit both CMA parts. The overlap with topics like performance management and financial management does make your preparation noticeably faster, though.
