Foundation in Accountancy (FIA) is designed for students who are beginning their business education journey. It is specifically designed to provide you with a working knowledge of business finance, and to open up career opportunities in both inside and outside finance.
It’s not a single fixed qualification, it’s a group of routes you can choose from based on your existing qualifications, experience, and career goals, developed with employers’ expectations in mind.

Unlike the full ACCA Qualification, FIA sets no academic entry requirements at all. You don’t need a minimum grade or any prior qualification to begin.
If you have no formal qualifications, or it’s been a while since you last studied, we recommend starting at the ACCA Diploma in Financial and Management Accounting (RQF Level 2), so you build your fundamentals gradually.
Wherever you begin, completing the ACCA Diploma in Accounting and Business (RQF Level 4), or the Foundation Diploma if you’re studying from Pakistan or Bangladesh, lets you transfer onto the full ACCA Qualification with free exemptions from the Applied Knowledge exams.

FIA ACCA is an entry-level suite of qualifications, sitting below the full ACCA Qualification. It’s designed for anyone starting their business education journey that gives you a working understanding of business finance and a head start toward the ACCA Qualification itself.
Completing FIA and progressing into full ACCA earns you free exemptions from the entire Applied Knowledge Module.
FIA is ACCA’s entry-level suite of qualifications, while “ACCA” usually refers to the full ACCA Qualification that comes after it. You can consider FIA as the on-ramp: it starts at GCSE level and builds up to the equivalent of the first year of a degree, giving you the fundamentals before you move into ACCA’s Applied Knowledge, Applied Skills, and Strategic Professional levels.
They’re not two separate qualifications competing for your attention, completing FIA and progressing into full ACCA gets you free exemptions from the entire Applied Knowledge Module.
Most students complete the full FIA group of exams in 12 to 18 months, though there’s no fixed time limit if you need longer. Because exams are computer-based and available on demand throughout the year, you can progress at a pace that fits your schedule.
FIA consists of 10 Foundation-level exams in total. The core seven, FA1, MA1, FA2, MA2, FBT, FFA, and FMA, build your foundational skills, while the remaining three specialist papers (FAU, FTX, FFM) are optional; you only need to complete two of these three to finish the CAT Qualification.
