The CFA Program is a professional qualification focused on investment analysis, portfolio management, financial markets, ethics, and related areas of finance. It consists of three exams, CFA Level I, Level II, and Level III, with each level becoming progressively more advanced.
To become a CFA charterholder, candidates must meet CFA Institute’s enrollment and eligibility requirements, pass all three CFA exams, complete the required professional work experience, and fulfill the applicable membership requirements. Passing the three exams alone does not automatically make someone a CFA charterholder.
The CFA Program has three levels: Level I, Level II, and Level III. Level I establishes foundational knowledge, Level II focuses more heavily on analysis and evaluation, and Level III emphasizes integrating and applying concepts to real-world investment situations.
The CFA exams are considered rigorous and require substantial preparation. Each level covers a broad range of financial topics and requires candidates to understand concepts and apply them to practical situations. The difficulty can vary depending on your academic background, finance knowledge, and preparation time.
CFA Institute states that candidates generally take three to four years to complete all three levels. Candidates should plan for approximately 300 hours of study per level, although the actual time required varies depending on individual preparation and prior knowledge.
The total cost of the CFA Program depends on the exam level, registration period, and applicable taxes and fees. CFA Institute publishes separate early and standard registration fees for the different exam levels. Because fees can change, candidates should check the current CFA Institute fee schedule before registering.
CFA Institute recommends planning for approximately 300 hours of study per level. However, your ideal study time may be higher or lower depending on your existing knowledge, academic background, study schedule, and familiarity with the curriculum.
The CFA curriculum covers major areas of investment and finance, including ethical and professional standards, quantitative methods, economics, financial statement analysis, corporate issuers, equity investments, fixed income, derivatives, alternative investments, and portfolio construction. Curriculum topics and their weightings may be updated periodically.
CFA exam availability varies by level. CFA Institute currently schedules Level I four times a year, Level II three times a year, and Level III twice a year. Candidates should check the current exam calendar for available testing windows and registration deadlines.
The CFA qualification can be relevant to careers in areas such as investment analysis, portfolio management, asset management, equity research, fixed-income analysis, investment banking, and other investment-related roles. The career opportunities available to an individual depend on their experience, skills, location, and specific employer requirements.
